Case Number:
RJ-1073-0
Period:
1995-12-14 - 2002-09-12
Issued:
Thu, 2004-04-22
Affected:
179
Component:
steering unit
For the 4WD vehicles modified from 2WD, the rivets securing the steering gear bracket onto the vehicle frame do not have sufficient strength, and therefore, repeatedly turning the steering wheel to the maximum can cause the rivets to break. If the vehicle continues to be driven with such broken rivets, the play of the steering wheel may increase, resulting in unreliable steering control.
Correction:
The steering gear bracket should be replaced with a new one, and it should be secured with the bolts (including the additional bolt) instead of the rivets.
Identification:
the bolts securing the steering gear bracket
